So, what exactly is Stevia?

Everything you need to know about Stevia, how it is used in our bars & why; all in one place.

It is a globally well known fact that sugar causes tooth decay and has been strongly correlated with other health issues, such as diabetes and obesity. At Discover Chocolate we wanted to create a chocolate bar that was conscious of all of it's potential consumers. Through researching alternatives to sugar and reaching out to others, Discover finally settled on an alternative; Stevia.

Stevia is a natural, plant-based sugar substitute found in North and South America, that is popularly used as an ingredient to make sweeteners. Stevia is an extract of a shrub of the sunflower family, and surprisingly is up to 150-300 times sweeter than your every-day refined sugars. Due to this, Discover only needs to use a tiny amount for our bars to be as sweet as can be.
It is known that Stevia is usually very sweet but can also leave a bitter aftertaste. We use some Malititol in our chocolate as well as a supplement for the Stevia; it cancels out that bitter aftertaste and leaves nothing but sweetness!
Malititol is similar to Stevia in it's properties; also containing few calories and barely contributing to blood sugar levels.

Stevia has been growing in popularity over the years, especially amongst those who suffer from diabetes. Gaining recognition from doctors and hospitals worldwide, the American Heart Association (AHA) and the American Diabetes Association (ADA) have stated that those suffering with diabetes can eat and enjoy products sweetened with Stevia, however they are NOT to compensate later with more calories/sugars because the product didn't contain as much as the standard sugary product.
